Zuri's
journey in hope it helps someway
I don’t remember much about where I came from, but I watched from my kennel as people passed by, saying kind words to me. One day, a nice lady stopped and reassured me, saying, “Don’t worry, pretty. You’ll find a good home!” I didn’t know what that meant, but the next time I saw her, she said the same thing: “Hi, friend! I bet you’ll get a great home.” And on my last day, I did.

Zuri’s Journey

I am Zuri!
Hi, my name is Zuri! I am a rescue pup from Animal Care Services in San Antonio. I was rescued on my very last day at the shelter. I am not sure what the “Rainbow Bridge”, is but I was told I was getting ready to cross over. My new pet parents had come to the rescue shelter several times to find a small chihuahua pup. They had visited several times looking for small pup and found one, and each time they came by the nice lady said, “don’t worry pretty you will get a good home.” Well, on the very day they were to get their new pup, the original owners found it and it got to return home to them. Great news for a rescue story. Mine was different, I was scared of the airplanes coming over and all the noise at the shelter. Many pups of my size left and did not return; I was told the larger you are the less time you get to be adopted. I am not sure about this, but I did know the nice people came again just to see me. I was out in the cage area looking around with another lady that wanted to see me. Then, I saw the man walking to me and I was so excited I kept jumping on the fence to see him. So much so, the person I was with, ask him, “Is this your dog?”. The man said, “no I just wanted to make sure she was still here and had a chance.” The lady I was with at the time said she would like to have me but could not. It was then the man went inside and ask if he could “sponsor me,” donate money so that I may be able to stay a while longer so someone may adopt me. He was told, “I am sorry sir, her time is up, you can either adopt or foster her, but she is out of time.” The man did not hesitate, left with no option to extend my stay at the shelter, he told them, “Ok, then I guess we will foster for now.” And just like that, I was ready to go to my new home. The shelter was to have surgery (spay) for me and start me on my shots and heartworm medicines. The Shelter would cover the cost for the shots and veterinary care for the first few visits; this is to help folks with the cost of a new adoption or foster. I just had to stay a day or so more and off I went to my new home. It is a wonderful place, where I have great food and fellow rescue buddy and a family that loves me. My story before the shelter must be hard, because I am still scared of some things. But since my new family adopted me after they fostered me for a month, my life has been GREAT! I especially like the part about getting a heartworm treatment that did not involve getting the “fast kill injections”. Because I did not do the “fast kill”, way I could still play and did not have to be kenneled because of my treatment. My new pet parents did a lot of research to help pick a way to get me better. I hope yours will too! There is more to tell and see so stick around and check out the site.

Time is mostly on your side
If your new best friend has been told they are heartworm positive, DO NOT PANIC! Unless you are in the end stages of Heartworm infection/diease. You have time to make good decisions for both you and your awesome pet. When heartworms die with treatment, they travel to the dogs' lungs. Here, they are absorbed into the dog slowly. This is where many things can go wrong. Ask yourself, does it make sense to kill heartworms a little at a time and have the dog in a better quality of life or the following: "fast kill" method of heartworm treatment is an incredibly perilous, high-stakes procedure. It involves injecting a toxic, arsenic-based poison directly into the dog's back muscle to rapidly eradicate the adult worms. This sudden purge, however, unleashes a cataclysmic event within the dog's circulatory system. The decomposing worms are violently flushed into the lungs, triggering a potentially fatal cascade of events. The immediate and overwhelming risk is the formation of massive blood clots (thromboembolism), which can instantly block vital blood flow and lead to sudden, agonizing death. Survival is, contingent upon absolutely minimal activity for weeks—even the slightest exertion could dislodge a clot and seal the dog's fate. Even with the most stringent restrictions and desperate hopes, there is absolutely no guarantee of survival, or any other method, the specter of catastrophic, fatal clotting looms over the entire, desperate ordeal. This brutal approach turns a treatment into a coin-flip between life and death. So, ask yourself, isn't worth taking a moment to make a decision that can lead to quality of life, over a procedure developed over 30 years ago that can cause much pain and virtually kill your dog in a literal heartbeat. TIME IS mostly on your side. Take minute to breathe and look for answers.

Zuri beat heartworms!
No painful arsenic based injections for Zuri. She did an alternative to the injections, to get rid of heartworms. The Absolutely Unofficial Guide to beating Heartworms:
Are You Ready to Give Your Dog the Best Quality of Life Possible? The Zuri Way to Overcome HEARTWORMS—Without Fear!
HEARTWORMS sound scary—but YOU’VE GOT THIS! Take a deep breath, in and out, and let’s walk through a calm, informed approach that worked for Zuri.
The Zuri Way to Overcome Heartworms—Without Fear!
- First, Don’t Panic! Your dog needs you calm and focused. Heartworms are serious, but there are options beyond the “fast kill” method.
- Find a Vet Who Listens. Not every vet will jump straight to aggressive treatments. Zuri’s vet suggested the “fast kill” injections, but her family said a firm NO after researching safer alternatives. Heartworms are parasites—just like hookworms or roundworms—so a gentler approach can work.
- Ask About the Stage of Infection. Are there eggs in the blood? Adults in the heart? This matters! Some treatments only target eggs, leaving adults behind. Request an antigen test to confirm adult worms.
- Explore Alternatives Thoughtfully. Zuri’s family chose Advantage Multi after careful research. It wasn’t perfect, but it was the best option they had at the time. Today, there may be even better solutions, so read, study, and weigh the risks vs. benefits.
- Monitor Your Dog Closely. After each dose, watch for changes. Zuri sometimes felt tired and sensitive to sounds. Remember: these medicines can act as neurotoxins, so adverse reactions are possible. Stay informed and proactive. Remember, the right nutrition is key to your dog’s health and wellbeing.
Zuri’s Journey:
- – One month of doxycycline
- – Monthly Advantage Multi for 18 months
- – Regular blood checks every 6 months. Start the best nutrition you can for your best friend.
- – Today, Zuri is heartworm-free and thriving!
YOU’VE GOT THIS—and your dog is counting on you!
What Food does
Zuri eat?
Whatever life Zuri had before her home now, it was apparent she would eat just about anything. This includes whatever bug, lizard or even bee she could and can catch, and I am afraid if Mr. Squirrel fell off the fence, well………………..
We currently use a home cooked blend of protein and vegetables mixed with a dehydrated food called Sundays. Please see the recipe below and the supplements page as well.
We use a Ninja Foodi for the main batch that makes 1 ½ to 2 weeks’ worth of food, and that way you know its fresh and even if you freeze some, which we do, it will be fresh frozen and thawed soon. Pressure cooking is one of the best ways to maintain most of the foods nutrients and that’s what we do.
